Tamil Nadu Budget 2026 Highlights: CM Vijay’s Top 10 Announcements Every Common Man Should Know

The actor-turned-politician, C. Joseph Vijay, aka Thalapathy, has presented his budget for Tamil Nadu as chief minister on August 5, 2026. He marked his presence along with his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government on the first day of the state legislature’s assembly session. This is also TVK’s first maiden budget. Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin and other DMK MLAs have also arrived at the assembly to welcome the CM and hear the budget. CM Vijay’s budget is called Vetri Tamizhagam – Vision Document’, comprising ten key focus areas.

Tamil Nadu’s Finance Minister, N. Marie Wilson, while presenting the state’s budget, said, “This Government, founded on the great ideals of inclusive growth, social justice, equality, women’s safety, eradication of poverty, a drug-free Tamil Nadu, and a corruption-free, honest, and transparent administration, has not only spoken of these ideals over the last three months but has also demonstrated them through action.”

“The people of Tamil Nadu have increasingly come to recognize that this is a Government built on the enduring principles of genuine social justice and honest governance,” Wilson said.

The state finance minister highlighted significant accomplishments of TVK including a hike in free electricity to consumers with bi-monthly consumption of up to 500 units, to 200 units and reducing their household expenses; a loan for farmers through co-operative societies; a special package for Kuruvai cultivation; the ‘Singapenn Special Task Force’ for women’s safety; creation of Anti-Narcotics Task Force Units at the district level to root out the deep-seated drug culture in Tamil Nadu; and closure of 717 liquor retail outlets located near educational institutions, places of worship, and bus stands that disrupted daily public life.

Wilson stated the government will implement ‘Thaaimaaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam’ from 15th September, the birth anniversary of Perarignar Anna, for children born in government hospitals. He said, “The implementation of these schemes has reinforced the trust that people have placed in our government.”

Tamil Nadu to implement schemes listed in the Vetri Tamizhagam Vision Document, which focuses on empowering women, improving governance, providing housing for all, ensuring safe drinking water, generating sustainable livelihood opportunities, protecting social justice, and promoting green cover.

The financial debt of Tamil Nadu, which reached Rs 10 lakh crore prior to TVK’s victory, has been concerning, leaving limited fiscal space for new schemes and programs. Wilson said, in these challenging circumstances, the government will take various measures to recover the state from its tight fiscal position.

He said, “This Government is committed to making the necessary social, economic and human capital investments in Tamil Nadu – which has for many years been a leading State on several socio-economic indicators in India – into a poverty-free, prosperous State that offers equal opportunity to all and upholds social justice, and to propel the State into a 1.5 Trillion dollar economy by the year 2036.”
