This $9.5M Pasadena Estate Looks 100 Years Old—Until You Step Inside
A vine-covered Mediterranean estate in Pasadena, CA that looks as though it has stood for a century or more, is actually just 16 years old, and it/s now on the market for $9.5 million.
Located at 1466 San Pasqual Street, the home was designed by architect John Barber to blend in with its neighbors—landmark homes that are roughly six times its age.
The home is represented by Brent Chang of Compass.
Behind automatic driveway gates, the exterior borrows many of the period architectural elements used by Wallace Neff and Marston & Van Pelt, defining names in Southern California’s early 20th-century residential architecture. The result was convincing enough that the house was once the lone new builds featured on a Pasadena Heritage tour of Spanish Revival homes from the 1920s and ’30s.
Inside, however, the floor plan is decidedly modern. The main house offers 9- to 11-foot ceilings throughout, a two-story entry, a two-story family room and two staircases. French doors open to outdoor patios and a fireplace.
The open kitchen includes a breakfast area, pantry and butler’s pantry, while a library features its own fireplace and bar. There are two primary suites, each with a walk-in closet and private water closet, plus three additional suites and upper-level laundry.
The estate last sold in 2015 for $6.4 million, according to property records. Two years later, a 2,120-square-foot pool house was added. It includes two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen and a lounge with a wall of stacking glass doors that opens to the pool and spa.
The pool house’s lower level holds a game room with an automatic screen and projector, cubby bunk beds, a bathroom, laundry and separate front and rear entrances.
All together, the property spans 9,150 square feet with seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms on a 0.73 acre lot.
The grounds include a circular drive, three automatic gates, multiple lawns, gardens and patios. A secure rear driveway leads to a secondary motor court with a garage that fits four cars.
And behind all the period details are a set of thoroughly modern systems, including 400-amp electrical service, copper plumbing, a whole-house water filter, a fire sprinkler system and two water heaters which were installed in 2022.
