NatWest’s mortgage balances grow by £1.2bn in Q3

NatWest mortgage balances increased by £1.2bn in the third quarter of 2026, as the bank reported continued growth in its retail lending portfolio.

NatWest said its year-to-date balance sheet growth in retail banking was “primarily in the mortgage portfolio”.

Over the first nine months of 2026, mortgage balances grew by £8.3bn, or 3.9%, from £212.1bn at the end of 2025 to £220.4bn at the end of September.

NatWest’s mortgage market share also increased to 12.7% in September, up from 12.5% in December 2025.

The bank’s profit, before impairments, increased marginally to £2.5bn in Q3, up from £2.4bn in Q2.

NatWest also reported that it had exceeded its 2026 first-time buyer lending target, having delivered more than £10bn in lending. Meanwhile, 36,000 customers had connected £6.2bn in mortgage balances through its Mortgage Elsewhere Hub.

Retail banking income benefited from lending growth during the quarter, but this was partly offset by lower mortgage margins. The division’s net interest margin fell to 2.65% in Q3, from 2.69% in Q2.
