Central Government Employees To Get Rs 6,908 Bonus? Check Eligibility, Service Conditions And Calculation

Personal Finance

The Central Government has announced a non-productivity-linked bonus for eligible employees for the accounting year 2025-26, with the maximum payout fixed at Rs 6,908 for a 30-day bonus. Although the benefit is described as a 30-day bonus, employees will not necessarily receive an amount equal to their actual monthly salary. This is because the government has set a monthly wage ceiling of Rs 7,000 for calculating the payment.

Central Government Employees To Get Rs 6,908 Bonus: Check Service Conditions And Salary Limit

The bonus is intended for specific categories of central government employees who are not covered by separate productivity-linked bonus schemes. The Finance Ministry’s order, dated October 15, 2026, also sets out the eligibility conditions for certain defence and paramilitary personnel, employees of Union Territory administrations and qualifying casual labourers.

Central Government Employees

The non-productivity-linked bonus, also known as an ad hoc bonus, is mainly intended for Group C employees and non-gazetted Group B employees who are not covered by a productivity-linked bonus scheme.

Eligible personnel of the Central Para Military Forces and the Armed Forces are also covered, subject to the conditions mentioned in the government order. Employees of Union Territory administrations may qualify if they follow the Central Government’s pay structure and are not covered by another bonus or ex-gratia scheme.

However, the bonus is not automatically available to every Central Government employee. Eligibility depends on the employee’s category, service record and coverage under other bonus arrangements. Gazetted officers and employees who already fall under separate productivity-linked bonus schemes are generally outside the scope of this particular payment.

Central Government Bonus: Check Service Period Required To Qualify For Full Payment

To receive the full bonus, an eligible employee must have been in service on March 31, 2026, and must have completed at least six months of continuous service during the 2025-26 accounting year.

Employees who completed at least six months but less than a full year of qualifying service will receive the bonus on a pro-rata basis. In simple terms, their payment will be calculated according to the number of eligible months they worked during the year.

For example, an employee who qualifies for only six months of service will not automatically receive the same amount as someone who completed the full qualifying period. The department will calculate the payment based on the eligible service period, following the rounding rules specified in the order.

The March 31, 2026, cut-off date is also important. Departments must check employees’ service records and confirm that they meet the prescribed conditions before processing payments.

Central Government Bonus Fixed At Rs 6,908? Check Salary Limit And Calculation

The main reason is the Rs 7,000 monthly wage ceiling notified for calculating the bonus. The government does not use an employee’s entire salary if it is higher than this limit. Instead, it calculates the payment using the lower of the employee’s average eligible emoluments and the prescribed ceiling.

The calculation for a 30-day bonus is:

Monthly wage ceiling: Rs 7,000

Bonus period: 30 days

Calculation: Rs 7,000 × 30 ÷ 30.4

Final bonus amount: Rs 6,908 after rounding

The figure of 30.4 represents the average number of days in a month used in this calculation. Applying the formula gives Rs 6,907.89, which is rounded to Rs 6,908. This means an employee earning Rs 25,000 or Rs 40,000 a month will not receive a bonus calculated on that entire salary under this scheme. If the employee otherwise qualifies and their average emoluments exceed Rs 7,000, the notified ceiling applies.

On the other hand, if an eligible employee’s average monthly emoluments are below Rs 7,000, the bonus is calculated using the lower actual amount rather than the Rs 7,000 ceiling.
