Michael Douglas Says Kobe Bryant Often Visited Catherine Zeta-Jones’ L.A. Home
Michael Douglas has revealed that late NBA legend Kobe Bryant was a frequent visitor to his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones‘ Los Angeles home during the early days of their romance.
The 82-year-old actor made the surprising revelation in his new memoir, “One Helluva Ride,” recalling how Bryant lived near Zeta-Jones in the Pacific Palisades in the late 1990s.
At the time, Douglas and Zeta-Jones were navigating a long-distance relationship after meeting at the Deauville American Film Festival in France in 1998.
While Douglas was living in New York, the actress had established a home in Los Angeles, where she was building her Hollywood career.
However, according to Douglas, Bryant, who played for the Los Angeles Lakers, had developed a habit of visiting his future wife’s property.
“She had a house in the Palisades, right below Kobe Bryant’s,” Douglas penned in his memoir.
The “Fatal Attraction” star suggested that Bryant would repeatedly find reasons to visit Zeta-Jones, including claiming that his dog had gone missing.
“Apparently Kobe kept finding excuses to stop by Catherine’s house. I’m not sure how many times he ‘lost his dog,’ but it was a lot!” Douglas teased.
At the time, Bryant had yet to meet his future wife, Vanessa Laine, whom he married in 2001.
Despite living on opposite sides of the country, Douglas and Zeta-Jones continued developing their relationship through regular phone conversations.
“We started talking on the phone pretty regularly, until we could finally see each other again,” he said.
The actress’ increasingly busy schedule also meant that she was frequently traveling for work, including filming projects such as “Entrapment” and “High Fidelity.”
Their romance continued to blossom, and the couple announced their engagement on New Year’s Eve in 1999.
Just five months later, in May 2000, Bryant proposed to Laine.
Douglas and Zeta-Jones ultimately tied the knot in November 2000 and went on to welcome two children, Dylan and Carys.
Years later, Zeta-Jones would reflect on her connection to Bryant after the basketball icon and his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, were killed in a helicopter crash in January 2020.
In an emotional Instagram tribute, the actress recalled how she and Bryant first became acquainted as neighbors in the Pacific Palisades.
According to Zeta-Jones, their initial introduction came about because Bryant’s dog repeatedly wandered onto her property.
“We met the day he moved in through his dog, that started to, and continued to wander in to my garden,” she wrote.
The actress also recalled being able to see Bryant’s private basketball court from her home, where she witnessed his dedication to the sport.
She reflected on how neither of them could have anticipated the extraordinary career he would go on to have.
Bryant, who won five NBA championships during his career with the Lakers, was among nine people killed in the helicopter crash.
Zeta-Jones expressed her heartbreak over the tragedy, offering condolences to the families affected by the devastating loss.
Douglas’ recollection of Bryant’s visits is one of several personal stories included in his newly released memoir, which explores his decades in Hollywood and his relationships.
The actor also reflects on his marriage to Zeta-Jones, including their brief separation in 2013 and eventual reconciliation.
Despite experiencing challenges throughout their marriage, the couple celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in November 2025.
