Anyone who has bought a new home in Bengaluru and has inherited a property, or moved into a rented flat in the city knows that getting an electricity connection is still a task since it is usually still in the builder’s or previous owner’s name.

Getting it changed has traditionally meant a trip to the local Bescom office, a stack of paperwork, and often a middleman charging a premium just to push the file through.

Bescom’s online name-change facility for urban consumers has been made to let people apply, upload documents, and track their request without going to the subdivision office.

Where To Apply Online For A New Connection

Urban consumers have two digital routes to initiate a name change. The first is Bescom’s own customer portal, where users register for an account, log in, and raise a request under the “Name Change” category.

The second is the Karnataka government’s Seva Sindhu portal, where applicants select Bescom under Departments and Services and choose the “Name Change: Non RAPDRP” option before logging in with their credentials to proceed.

Documents You Need Apply

In order to apply one must provide an identity proof and ownership proof, such as a sale deed or khata copy, along with a No Objection Certificate from the previous consumer or owner.

Applicants also need a Power Supply Agreement and an Indemnity Bond, both of which are typically executed on e-stamp paper and depend on whether the connection is Low Tension or High Tension.

A copy of the most recent paid electricity bill rounds out the document list, and applicants should keep scanned copies ready before starting the online form to avoid the process stalling midway.

Fees And Processing Time

The name-change application has a fee of around Rs.100, though this does not cover the separate cost of notarising the agreement and indemnity bond, which most applicants get done at shops located near Bescom subdivision offices.

Once submitted, a Junior Engineer is expected to verify the premises, a step that generally takes seven to fifteen days, after which the name update reflects in Bescom’s billing system within roughly fifteen to thirty days of the original application.
