Carney says Washington is “coming closer to our position” on steel and auto tariffs

The Section 232 tariffs are administered by the Commerce Department, according to the same outlet, putting US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick rather than the US Trade Representative’s office at the centre of the negotiations.

Lutnick and Dominic LeBlanc, the minister responsible for Canada-US trade, have been in regular contact recently, one of the sources told Reuters.

Trump has previously announced he would raise tariffs on steel and auto imports from Canada to 50 percent from January 1, 2027, Reuters reported.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said in Ottawa on Monday there had been “a slight intensification” in talks, Reuters reported, adding that Ottawa had not changed its stance.

“To the extent any progress has been made, it’s because the US is coming closer to our position,” Carney told reporters.
