The latest spell of rain has affected several parts of Chennai, with roads in low-lying areas reporting water stagnation during the morning hours. Key stretches, including Anna Salai and Woods Road, have also experienced waterlogging, raising concerns over traffic movement and the daily commute.

Chennai Weather Today

With another spell of rain forecast in the coming days, residents are advised to follow weather updates and local administration announcements before planning their travel.

Chennai Rains: Meenambakkam, Nungambakkam Among Worst-Hit Areas

Rainfall figures released by the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) indicate that several parts of Chennai received substantial rainfall overnight and into the early morning of October 21.

Meenambakkam recorded 12 cm of rainfall, followed by Nungambakkam at 11 cm and Taramani at 10 cm. Madhavaram received 9 cm, while Villivakkam and Nandanam recorded 8 cm each.

The rainfall has affected both central Chennai and suburban areas, increasing the possibility of traffic delays, particularly on roads prone to waterlogging. Commuters using two-wheelers, buses and cabs may face longer travel times, while disruptions to local transport can also affect office attendance, deliveries and business activity.

Rainfall has also been reported in other parts of Tamil Nadu, including Coimbatore, Kancheepuram, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi and Kanniyakumari, indicating that the wet spell extends beyond Chennai.

School Holiday Today In Chennai And 4 Other Districts

District administrations have announced school closures for Wednesday, October 21, in five districts due to the prevailing weather conditions. The holiday applies to schools in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and Ranipet. The decision is intended to reduce the risks faced by students travelling during periods of heavy rainfall and possible waterlogging.

Parents should check messages issued by their respective schools and district administrations for any additional instructions. Unless authorities specifically announce otherwise, a school holiday should not automatically be treated as a closure for colleges or other educational institutions.

The closures may also affect working parents who need to make alternative childcare arrangements. Residents are advised to allow additional travel time and avoid waterlogged roads wherever possible.

Chennai Weather Prediction: Wet Weather Likely To Continue Till October 26

The weather outlook suggests that Tamil Nadu could experience further rainfall over the coming days. A developing weather system over the Bay of Bengal is expected to support the continuation of the wet spell, with the current forecast indicating rainfall activity across the state until October 26.

For the morning of October 21, light to moderate rain is likely at isolated locations across several districts, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram. Other districts in the forecast include Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur and Pudukkottai. Rainfall is also expected to affect parts of southern Tamil Nadu, including Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari.

Orange Alert For Southern Tamil Nadu; Heavy Rain Warning Issued

The southern districts of Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi are among the areas under an orange alert, with the weather office warning of the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall on October 21 and 22. Rainfall could reach 20 cm in some locations, according to the forecast.
