Podcast: The Hidden Opportunities in an Unattractive Bond Market
Host Ryan Nauman interviews Steve Katznelson, managing director and CIO of Radcliffe Capital Management, about where bond-market inefficiencies persist and how investors should think about credit, duration and liquidity risk.
Katznelson says most U.S. fixed income is efficient, but Radcliffe targets structural pockets with limited capacity, including U.S. corporate bonds nearing maturity, BDC-issued bonds and SPAC arbitrage. He argues key risks are not fully priced in: higher rates (duration), widening spreads/defaults (credit) and painful illiquidity, citing private credit flows and lessons from 2008.
Katznelson describes Radcliffe’s short-duration approach aimed at “cash-plus” returns, re-underwriting stale-rated credits, and seeking high-yield-like returns without taking unnecessary duration or credit risk, while warning that tight spreads make the broader bond market unattractive.
