Your Revenue Is Up, but Your Bank Account Is Empty? Here’s What’s Actually Broken

Growing revenue doesn’t always mean building a profitable business. Here’s how two entrepreneurs learned to prioritize cash flow, strengthen operations, and scale sustainably.

In the beginning, we were juggling six kids (with Victoria expecting two more) while chasing the dream: build something big enough to cash out and maybe, just maybe, hit that entrepreneurial jackpot.

We knew the drill. Hire smart people, turn our secret sauce into a product, and build systems so we weren’t the ones grinding for every single dollar. Every time we brought on a new consultant, we got one step closer to the real goal: a business that didn’t mean missing bedtime stories, bath time, or helping with algebra homework.

Fast-forward to year two. We’d crossed seven figures in revenue, bought out two partners, made some solid hires, and built real momentum. From the outside, we looked like we were killing it.

On the inside? We were taking pay cuts just to keep up with expenses.

The cracks were showing. It was time to stop duct-taping things together and start building real infrastructure.

When Revenue Growth Doesn’t Equal Profitability

This is the moment when you stop just looking successful and start actually making your business work for you. Translation: profitable, not just popular.

Maybe you’re already living it. Revenue charts are up and to the right, new clients keep sliding into your inbox, and your product is flying off the shelves. Feels like you’ve made it, right?

Not so fast.

Here’s the gut check: If your business is booming but your bank account still looks anemic—or worse, you’re not even paying yourself a real salary for all those late nights and missed weekends—then something is broken under the hood.

You might be stuck in the entrepreneur’s hamster wheel.

While revenue is up, so are your hours, your stress, and your expenses. You’re running faster just to stay in place, trading time for money with zero leverage.

Sure, your top-line numbers look impressive, but your margins are paper-thin or totally MIA. That means no breathing room, no owner distributions, and definitely no spontaneous trips to the Caribbean.

If you’re nodding along, it’s time to get brutally honest about what’s working and what’s just working you into the ground.

Real success isn’t about looking busy. It’s about building a business that pays you, sustains you, and gives you the freedom you set out to find.

Scaling is a whole different experience. Suddenly, your systems and team are pulling their weight, your business runs more smoothly, and you’re no longer the engine behind every single win.

We started scaling the minute we hit our come-to-Jesus moment.

The Cash Flow Wake-Up Call That Changed Our Business

We had bought out our other partners, one of whom wasn’t actively managing cash flow, and we were just a few payrolls away from running out of money.

To get us back on track, we had to slash our own salaries, overhaul our finances to put cash flow at the center of everything, and double down on sales.

Oh yeah, and Victoria had just found out she was pregnant with baby number five.

The sales strategy worked—too well.

We brought in too many clients at once, charged too little, and were slow to get signed contracts and issue invoices to our large corporate clients.

That meant we didn’t have the cash available to hire the people we desperately needed.

While our revenue charts looked like a rocket launch, our bottom line was a bloodbath.

Both of us were still earning less than six figures—a far cry from those cushy corporate paychecks we’d left behind.

So we did what any Type A, deeply driven female founders would do: We went hunting for office space.

No more squatting in Victoria’s brother’s extra offices.

We overhauled our systems, tightened up operations, and got ruthless (in the best way) about which clients deserved to work with us.

We stopped apologizing for our premium product and started charging what we were worth.

After way too many late nights and caffeine-fueled strategy sessions, we started hiring again.

That first scrappy little bank loan gave us just enough breathing room to get our feet under us.

Scaling Means Building a Business That Works Without You

Every entrepreneur’s path to scale looks a little different, but if you’re a mom building a business, you need to become a damn expert at it.

Think of a solo practitioner billing hourly. She can only earn more by working more.

But if she builds a small team of rock stars, launches a full product suite, or adds digital programs, she can start generating revenue without being glued to her screen or bribing her kids with fruit snacks to stay quiet during meetings.

Let’s revisit our favorite healthy snack maker, who recently went through a transformative scale-up.

She raised a little money, stopped hand-mixing energy bites in her kitchen at midnight, hired a baker and a food scientist, and rented a commercial kitchen with machines that actually bag the snacks for her.

Suddenly, she’s not drowning in production.

She’s focused on selling, growing, and figuring out how to see her newborn more often than just during middle-of-the-night feedings.

Scaling isn’t just about chasing bigger numbers. It’s about building a business that works for you, not the other way around.

It’s also tougher than simply grinding out growth. But it’s worth every second—before, during, and after.

For moms especially, scaling is the ultimate power move.

It’s about getting strategic, using your strengths to multiply your impact, and fiercely protecting your time for the things only you can do.

That means focusing on the decisions that actually move your business forward while leaving plenty of room for dance recitals, baseball games, and those lazy Sunday afternoons that make life sweet.

What Got You Here Won’t Get You There

Beth learned our new golden rule at a mandatory executive summit she was forced—err, asked—to attend during her corporate career.

She still remembers one line a professor hammered into everyone’s heads on repeat:

“What got you here won’t get you there.”

That’s the new golden rule, friends.

It’s the only piece of corporate-speak we’re allowing in this book, and it took us nine chapters to even say it out loud.

But damn, it’s good.
