US Stock Market Today LIVE: NASDAQ, S&P 500, Dow Jones Falls As CPI Inflation Rises To 3.7%; Dollar, Treasury Yields Rally

The US stock futures erased their early gains and traded lower on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, as Wall Street will open with a focus shifted towards upcoming CPI inflation, which will offer further clarity on rate hikes from the US Federal Reserve.

However, yesterday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average or DJIA index dropped 180.45 points or 0.4% to 51,670.10, while the Nasdaq Composite index slipped 41.52 points or 0.15% to finish at 27,204.38 and the S&P 500 index mildly down by 1.8 points to close at 7,805.45. Financial stocks and chipmaker stocks were broadly in the bearish trend, impacting all three indices, like the Dow Jones, Nasdaq Composite, and S&P 500.

Another wave of mega-cap companies’ earnings will be announced on Wednesday. These include Bank of America Corp. (BAC), BlackRock Inc. (BLK), Fastenal Co. (FAST), Morgan Stanley (MS), Progressive Corp. (PGR), and State Street Corp. (STT).

Additionally, Wednesday will be pivotal due to CPI inflation data along with MBA Mortgage Applications, Core CPI, Real Average Weekly Earnings, Real Average Hourly Earnings, and Federal Reserve Beige Book reports.

The market is expecting US CPI inflation to accelerate to 3.6% in September 2026 from 3.4% of the previous month. On a month-on-month basis, CPI is expected to increase by 0.6% which would be highest in the past five months. Annual core inflation is estimated to rise to 2.5% from 2.4%. If CPI rises, market will likely fall as it will heighten the possibility of rates hike.

The US annual inflation rate accelerated to 3.7% in September 2026, up from 3.4% in each of the previous two months and above market expectations of 3.6%, driven by higher energy prices. Gasoline rose 34.2% yoy, more than 27.4% in August and fuel oil prices increased 74.2%, compared with 52% previously. Inflation also accelerated for shelter, to 3.2% from 3%, but slowed for food to 2.5% from 2.7%. On a monthly basis, the CPI went up 0.6%, marking its largest gain in five months, compared to 0.4% in August and in line with forecasts. Gasoline jumped 9.1%, accounting for over half of the monthly all items increase. Meanwhile, annual core inflation rate went up to 2.6% from 2.4%, more than forecasts of 2.5% while monthly core CPI inflation steadied at 0.3%, the same as in August and defying forecasts it would slow to 0.2%, as per Trading Economics.
