Former Morgan Stanley Head Lists UES Townhouse For $80M
The former chief executive officer of Morgan Stanley is ready to leave New York and relocate to North Carolina, but doesn’t intend to do so without leaving a record in his wake.
John Mack and his wife, Christy, listed their townhouse at 165 East 70th Street on the Upper East Side for $80 million, the Wall Street Journal reported. The listing marks the most expensive townhouse on the market in New York City and would set an all-time sale record if it trades for the asking price.

The running is tight, considering the city’s current record is held by the $77.1 million deal for 14 East 67th Street that closed in 2019. Downtown Manhattan isn’t far behind after a $72.5 million off-market deal for a double-wide home in Greenwich Village set a peak for the market after closing in 2024.

The couple purchased the home in 2009 for $13.5 million after raising their children in Westchester County. They worked to convert the 1902-built carriage house into a six-bedroom, 16,000-square-foot home with all the bells and whistles of a luxury residence in the city.

The renovation, which unfolded over six years before the Macks actually moved in, resulted in a six-story luxury abode. Architect Sawyer Berson and interior designer Eleanor LaSota led the revamp, aiming to preserve as many historic details as possible.
Dimensions of the home reflect its legacy as a carriage house for horses, such as the 31-foot-wide living room. Amenities, meanwhile, include a wine cellar, a home theater, a gym and a spa suite with a massage room and a hot tub.
The listing breaks down to an even $5,000 per square foot. The Agency’s Mike Fabbri has the listing.
In Manhattan, townhouse deal volume jumped more than 31 percent year-over-year in the second quarter, while the average sale price increased nearly 26 percent to $10.5 million, according to Leslie Garfield’s quarterly report.
On the Upper East Side, the average sale price surged over 49 percent annually to just under $14 million, while sales volume increased roughly 33 percent despite a drop in the number of sales from 36 in the second quarter last year to 32.
