US Stock Market: Nasdaq, S&P 500 Falls For 2nd Day In Row, Dow Jones Up; Futures Gain On Friday, Wall Street Outlook

The US stock market witnessed a mixed trend overnight, with Nasdaq and the S&P 500 falling for the second day in a row as technology stocks plunged. The hawkish sentiment in FOMC minutes weighed as well. On Friday, US stock futures gained momentum as investors await October’s US consumer sentiment data, along with major earnings reports from companies like Delta Air Lines and BlackRock.

Dow Jones + S&P 500 + Nasdaq Composite

The S&P 500 index slipped by 36.41 points or 0.5% to end at 7,765.36, while selloffs in some mega tech stocks pushed Nasdaq Composite to topple by 345.35 points or 1.25% to close at 27,193.34. On the other hand, Dow Jones gained by 51.77 points or 0.10% to end at 51,231.64 on October 8th.

S&P 500 and Nasdaq marked their second consecutive losing streak, while Dow Jones recovered from previous losses.

“Global cues offer little relief. Wall Street ended lower overnight, with technology stocks weighing on the Nasdaq. Minutes from the Federal Reserve and hawkish comments from Governor Christopher Waller have reinforced concerns over the possibility of further rate increases, keeping global risk appetite fragile,” said Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money.

He also added that crude oil remains the principal macroeconomic overhang. WTI is trading around $91-92 a barrel amid renewed attacks on shipping in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. Prices have pared some gains following the International Energy Agency’s move to accelerate emergency stock releases and President Donald Trump’s comments that the U.S. would not attack Iran immediately. However, with the conflict unresolved, the risk of further supply disruptions remains elevated.

Among stock-specific action, Trading Economics report revealed that reports suggested that OpenAI’s annualized revenue reached $50 billion at the end of September, below the widely cited $68 billion figure from last month. Chipmakers led the decline, with Micron falling 4.8%, Nvidia dropping 2.9%, Sandisk losing 4.9%, AMD sliding 3.9% and Intel tumbling 5.3%. Meanwhile, SpaceX gained more than 4% in extended trading after announcing a deal to acquire a nationwide spectrum portfolio.

In the early hours of October 9th, the Dow Jones futures surged by 104 points or 0.20% to trade at 51,597, while Nasdaq 100 futures also gained by 103.50 points or 0.33% to close at 31,073. Further, the S&P 500 futures soared 20.50 points or 0.3% to trade at 7,836.75.

Investors will eye the University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment – Preliminary on Friday. While companies like Delta Air Lines Inc. (DAL), GoldMining Inc. (GLDG), and New Horizon Aircraft Ltd. (HOVR) will report their quarterly results.

Elsewhere, the crude oil prices dropped by 1% with US WTI crude futures trading at 90.77 per barrel and Brent crude around $103.3 per barrel. On the other hand, spot gold and spot silver gained by 1% and 2% to trade near $4,175 per ounce and $60.16 per ounce. Among other commodities, natural gas prices and gasoline dropped by 1% each.

Oil prices trimmed their gains after President Donald Trump said on social media that the US was engaged in “productive discussions” with Iran and would refrain from attacking the country before the midterm elections. Trump also claimed that record volumes of crude were passing through the Strait of Hormuz, while stressing that the US naval blockade of Iranian ports would remain fully in place. However, later reports indicated that the US had prepared plans for three days of strikes against Iran, targeting drone and missile stockpiles, energy infrastructure and other sites. On Thursday, oil prices surged by as much as 5.6% as Tehran intensified attacks on tankers navigating the Strait of Hormuz, with nine vessels reportedly targeted over the past week. Meanwhile, Hurricane Isaias threatened offshore oil production in the Gulf of Mexico, prompting producers to shut in around 1.3 million barrels per day of crude output, as per Trading Economics.

The US 10-year treasury yield also held around 5.23% on Friday, still away from 24-year highs after well-received 30-year bond auction. The 30-year treasury yield also stood steady around 5.61%. US dollar slipped mildly but continued to be around 102 as markets price in roughly 82% probability of US Federal Reserve to hold rates in October policy, but with a 81% probability of a hike in December policy.
