What life insurers actually pay for
In fiscal year 2025 (FY25), life insurers paid out ₹6.3 trillion in benefits, according to the insurance regulator’s September 2026 consultation paper on distribution costs. Of this, death claims accounted for ₹0.47 trillion, or a mere 7%. Maturity benefits took 35%, surrender payouts 37%, and annuity and pension payments the remaining 20%.
