Off-Grid ‘Earthship’ Home Hits the Market for $625K in Wyoming

An off-grid Earthship home, built from 1,343 pounded tires and featuring a 66-foot greenhouse and custom bottle-glass work, has just landed on the market in Wyoming for $625,000.

Located in Wheatland, bordering 280 acres of Bureau of Land Management land, the two-bedroom residence sits on 55.13 acres of privacy.

“One of the coolest things about the home is that it is at a higher elevation and able to sustain a temperature that never gets below 62 degrees in the winter and 82 degrees in the summer,” says Rowan Bennett, who is co-listing the property with Holly Allison of #1 Properties Ranch and Recreation.

Built into the Laramie Peak foothills about an hour north of Cheyenne, the sustainable dwelling features a solar array, passive geothermal for cooling, a wind turbine, a backup diesel generator, and a roof water catchment system.

“What is also unique is that every system has a backup operation, so if the hot water heater goes out, there is a propane backup,” says Bennett.

The 1,500-square-foot interior features hand-troweled plaster walls, bottle-glass work, custom bottle lighting, and a built-in bed.

“It has been used as a secondary residence by the sellers, who used it as a retreat,” she notes. “It would also be cool to use it as an investment property and put some yurts on the property.”

Other highlights include flagstone and crushed-shell brick floors, peeled log vigas spanning the ceilings, and glass doors and walls.

The kitchen has custom pine cabinetry with hand-carved diamond inlays, tile countertops, a decorative tile backsplash, a Sun Frost energy-efficient refrigerator, and a countertop ice maker.

One full bathroom offers a claw-foot soaking tub and shower combination with an air massage system. The sellers, who are the original owners, built the residence in 2011.

A permitted domestic well can be found on the property, which also boasts outbuildings for storage. There is also a level building pad plumbed for sewer, awaiting a future garage or second dwelling with applicable approvals. Water utility has been stubbed across the road, ready for a future pond or garden.

“The next buyer will be someone who loves the outdoors and nature and is not big on putting a big carbon footprint out there,” Bennett says.
