Standard Chartered and LMAX Group Expand Partnership into Digital Asset Custody
Standard Chartered has been appointed as LMAX Group’s digital asset custodian across its DIFC branch in Dubai and Standard Chartered Luxembourg, expanding an existing partnership between the two firms.
The bank said LMAX Group is the first client to join its Luxembourg digital asset custody platform following Standard Chartered’s authorisation under the Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation in June 2026.
The appointment builds on a collaboration announced in July, when the firms executed what they described as the industry’s first live digital asset prime brokerage trades.
Under the expanded partnership, Standard Chartered will provide secure digital asset custody services to support LMAX Group’s institutional digital asset business, with the dual appointments giving the firm regulated custody solutions across key international financial centres in the Middle East and Europe.
“As institutional clients continue to scale their digital asset businesses, they need trusted infrastructure that can operate seamlessly across markets and regulatory regimes,” commented Ole Matthiessen, global head of transaction services and digital assets at Standard Chartered.
David Mercer, chief executive of LMAX Group, said the bank was establishing itself as one of the leading banking partners for the institutional digital asset market, describing the custody partnership as “a natural next step.”
The two firms added that they are also exploring the development of off-exchange custody solutions designed to combine bank-grade custody with access to institutional digital asset liquidity, allowing participants to trade while keeping assets with a regulated institution.
