Trump Appoints FHA Single-Family Head Matt Jones to Top Agency Post
Matt Jones has been nominated as FHA Commissioner and Assistant Secretary for Housing of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the White House announced.

Jones has served as deputy assistant secretary for single-family housing at HUD since early 2025, following about two years as Associate Vice President of Government Housing Finance for the Mortgage Bankers Association.
If the Senate confirms Jones, the assistant secretary role would make him second in command to HUD Secretary Scott Turner. Jones would replace former FHA Commissioner Frank Cassidy, who resigned the assistant secretary position in June.
The assistant secretary’s responsibilities include those of Commissioner of the Federal Housing Administration (FHA), an office within HUD that administers, underwrites, and insures government-backed mortgages.
Complex Housing Economy
“Matt Jones brings an unmatched depth of experience and continuity to the table. Having successfully steered the FHA’s single-family programs, he understands the operational and regulatory realities of the housing finance market. His leadership will be vital to ensuring stability, promoting access, and navigating the complexities facing our housing economy. We strongly support his nomination,” said Ed Delgado, Chairman Emeritus, Five Star Global and Principal, Mortgage Policy Advisors.

Ginnie Mae President Joseph Gormley has been filling the assistant secretary and FHA commissioner roles on an interim basis since Cassidy resigned.
Jones previously held senior positions at settlement services provider Aegis Title Partners from 2021 to 2024 and Union Home Mortgage in 2023. Jones was actively a managing member of Emeritus Capital LLC, a Michigan-based company that invests in single-family rental properties.
Scotsman Guide said that Jones supported Sen. Mike Crapo, R-Idaho, as senior counsel on the Senate’s banking and finance committees from 2017 to 2021 before returning to the private sector. Jones rejoined the MBA in 2023 as Associate Vice President of Government Housing Finance, overseeing the MBA’s government lending portfolio while managing its residential board of governors.
‘Wealth of Housing Experience’
David M. Dworkin, President and CEO of the National Housing Conference (NHC), released the following statement supporting Jones’ nomination.
“Matt Jones brings a wealth of housing experience and a deep commitment to affordable homeownership. His background in the mortgage industry and knowledge of housing policy have prepared him well for this role,” Dworkin said. “In the years that I have known Matt, he has consistently demonstrated a commitment to expanding access to affordable housing and ensuring that gains in homeownership are sustainable for the long term.”
Dworkin added: “I also want to recognize Joe Gormley for his leadership while serving in an acting capacity to carry out the duties of the Assistant Secretary for Housing. We are grateful for his ongoing service as acting FHA commissioner and are pleased to have his continued leadership as president of Ginnie Mae. We encourage the Senate to act as expeditiously as possible to confirm Matt as Commissioner. NHC is looking forward to working with Matt to expand access to affordable housing, support sustainable homeownership, and strengthen our nation’s housing finance system.”
