Canadian inflation data delayed as website issues plague Statistics Canada

By Mario Baker Ramirez

(Bloomberg) — Statistics Canada delayed the release of key inflation data Monday after higher-than-usual traffic caused technical problems on its website, the second major economic release affected by access issues in less than a month.

The monthly consumer price index report was published about 30 seconds later than its scheduled release at 8:30 a.m. in Ottawa. Journalists in a media lockup were unable to send their stories until the main release document, known as The Daily, was posted to the website.

“Due to abnormally high traffic volumes encountered on our website this morning, the decision was made to invoke our Business Continuity Plan to ensure prompt release of The Daily,” Statistics Canada said in a statement.

Under the plan, certain data tables are prioritized for release and, depending on the circumstances, publication of the complete suite of tables may be delayed. The agency did not rule out invoking the protocol again if similar circumstances arise.

As of 11:30 a.m. Ottawa time, parts of the website remained unavailable.

The disruption follows similar problems during the Aug. 28 release of second-quarter gross domestic product data, when detailed tables remained unavailable for hours after the headline figures were published.

The two incidents raise questions about reliable and timely access to market-moving government statistics, particularly as economists depend on the underlying tables to assess what is driving headline readings.

Monday’s issue comes as Prime Minister Mark Carney hosts global investors and business leaders in Toronto for the first Canada Investment Summit, part of the government’s effort to catalyze $1 trillion in investment over five years. The government is using the two-day gathering to promote Canada as a stable destination for global capital.
