Another Charter School Finds Outerborough Home in Bronx
It’s back-to-school season, not just for students, but also for educational facilities looking for their next properties.
Equality Charter School, which runs a handful of schools in the Bronx, purchased a three-story, 60,000-square-foot property at 801 Barthaldi Street in the Williamsbridge neighborhood for $54.5 million, according to property records. The sale works out to $908 per square foot.
The seller was Guido Subotovsky’s Azimuth Development Group, which built the school. The company often works on projects that benefit local communities, including affordable housing.
Completed last year, the school includes two cafeterias, a gymnasium and 6,000 square feet of rooftop recreational space, according to the Commercial Observer. It can accommodate up to 900 students, according to Azimuth, and Equality plans to use it for a tuition-free public elementary school.
It’s unclear who brokered the sale. Representatives from both buyer and seller did not immediately respond to requests for comment from the Observer.
Equality’s three other schools in the Bronx are an elementary school at 3901 White Plains Road, a middle school at 4140 Hutchinson River Parkway East and a high school at 2141 Seward Avenue. The first location was founded in 2009.
That’s the same year Subotovsky started Azimuth, which has built more than 1 million square feet of developments across New York City. One of those projects was a joint venture with Joy Construction for 330 multifamily units at 2069 Bruckner Boulevard, which also includes 12,000 square feet leased to The Village School last June.
This June, Azimuth and Jacob Feldman acquired a parking lot at 90-26 Grand Central Parkway near LaGuardia Airport in the East Elmont section of Queens for slightly below $13 million.
Elsewhere on the charter school beat, Launch Expeditionary Learning Charter School recently signed a lease for 77,000 square feet at 5902 Sixth Avenue in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The site, previously occupied by Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Academy, will feature amenities including a gymnasium, auditorium and cafeteria; the school is expected to open next fall.
