For millions of Indians working and studying away from home, Diwali often means one thing long before the festival actually arrives-a race to secure a train ticket. With Diwali set to be celebrated on November 8, 2026, passengers planning festive travel are now entering the crucial booking period.

The demand for train seats is expected to intensify over the coming weeks as people finalise their travel plans for Diwali and the subsequent Chhath Puja rush. Passengers travelling on popular routes may find that delaying a booking decision leaves them with long waiting lists or expensive last-minute alternatives.

60-Day Advance Booking Rule: When Can You Reserve Your Diwali Train Ticket?

Under the current Indian Railways advance reservation rules, tickets can generally be booked up to 60 days before the journey, with the journey date itself not included in the calculation.

This means passengers need to work backwards from their individual date of travel rather than simply looking for one “Diwali booking opening day”. Someone travelling home on November 5 will have a different reservation opportunity from a person planning to leave on November 8 or return after the festival.

Booking activity for the Diwali travel period began from September 6 for eligible travel dates. Passengers should calculate their respective booking window carefully, particularly if they are travelling on routes where festival demand traditionally overwhelms available capacity.

Diwali 2026 Special Trains: Check New Services Between Delhi, UP, Punjab & Bihar

Additional trains are being introduced to increase capacity during the festival season. Northern Railway has announced a number of Festival Special services that will connect major population centres with high-demand destinations in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and neighbouring regions.

Among the services is a special train pair between Varanasi Junction and Delhi Junction. Train No. 04209 will leave Varanasi at 10:15 pm and is scheduled to reach Delhi at 1:45 pm the following day. Its return counterpart, Train No. 04210, will depart Delhi at 6:50 pm and reach Varanasi at 9:50 am.

The Varanasi-Delhi services are planned to operate on selected days between early October and late November, covering a total of 50 trips during the festive period.

Passengers travelling between Uttar Pradesh and Delhi-NCR will also have another option through the Ayodhya Cantt.-Anand Vihar Terminal Festival Special. Train Nos. 04213 and 04214 are scheduled to operate during October and November and will make 36 trips.

The festive rush is not confined to Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. Passengers travelling between Punjab and Bihar are also expected to benefit from additional services. Train Nos. 04511 and 04512 will run between Chandigarh and Patna Junction, covering important stops including Ambala Cantt., Saharanpur, Roorkee, Moradabad, Bareilly, Varanasi, Buxar, Ara and Danapur.

Another special train pair, Nos. 04615 and 04616, will connect Firozpur Cantt. Junction with Patna Junction. The service will provide an additional option for passengers travelling from Punjab and adjoining areas towards Bihar.

These services could prove particularly important for people who are unable to secure berths on regularly scheduled trains. More special trains may also be announced if demand continues to rise.

Passengers planning to book a popular train should prepare before their reservation window opens. Logging in at the last minute, searching for trains and entering passenger details during the booking rush can cost valuable time.

Keeping passenger information ready and identifying several possible trains beforehand can make the process smoother. Having a second or third travel option is particularly important on routes where the most popular trains are likely to sell out quickly.

Travellers should also double-check all journey details before making a payment. The date, boarding point, destination, train and class of travel should be verified carefully, as correcting an error may be difficult once availability has disappeared.

A passenger who does not get a confirmed ticket on the first preferred train still has several options to explore. Festival Special trains can provide additional capacity, while changing the travel date by even one or two days may improve availability.

Searching from or to a nearby railway station can also expand the number of trains available. This strategy may be especially useful for passengers travelling to large cities served by multiple stations.

Waiting until the Tatkal booking window opens, however, can be a risky strategy during one of the country’s busiest travel periods. Tatkal tickets are also likely to face enormous demand, and securing one cannot be guaranteed.
