Keys for Life Luncheon Honors Industry Legends, Military Veterans
The exceptional life stories of five people were explored Wednesday at the Keys for Life Luncheon Wednesday at the Five Star Conference at the Omni Hotel in Dallas.
Industry leaders and peers joined together for the signature luncheon that celebrates the recipient of the newly created Legacy Award, the 2026 Lifetime Achievement Award, and to honor United States military veterans during a special presentation. The inspiring event highlighted leadership, service, and the individuals who have made a lasting impact on our industry and communities.
Legacy Award Launches
Ed Delgado, AMP, Managing Director, Mortgage Policy Advisors; Chairman Emeritus, Five Star Global, told attendees that this year’s event would include a new award, the Legacy Award.
“This award is intended and reserved for a visionary leader whose contributions have fundamentally shaped the trajectory of the mortgage industry, and it honors a professional who has not only achieved unparalleled success throughout their career as a service provider, but has also demonstrated a profound commitment to the stability and advancement of the housing market,” Delgado said.
The first Legacy Award recipient is the late Dr. Cheryl Travis-Johnson, EVP & COO of VRM Mortgage Services, who passed away last year.
“Dr. Cheryl Travis-Johnson was a visionary leader who led from a people-first perspective and always followed her faith as she made decisions and guided our company,” Keith Murray, President and CEO of VRM, said in a tribute video.
Tiffany Fletcher, COO of VRM Mortgage Services, accepted the award from Delgado in memory of Travis-Johnson.
“Dr. Cheryl Travis-Johnson was truly an icon in the housing industry, and if you asked anyone who had the privilege of working along with Cheryl how they would describe her in one word, you would hear words like innovator, visionary, trailblazer, inspiring,” Fletcher told the audience. “While all of these words are true, the word that best describes Cheryl for me is remarkable. She was a remarkable leader, colleague, mentor, and friend. Cheryl had a gift of bringing people together, challenging the status quo.”
Fletcher added: “She was truly one of a kind.”
Lifetime Achievement Award
The Lifetime Achievement Award went to John Vella, Chief Revenue Officer of LauraMac.
“For more than 35 years, John Vella has been an industry leader, serving in senior roles across mortgage companies, Wall Street subsidiaries, government agencies, and technology firms,” said Delgado, a longtime friend. “Today, he is Chief Revenue Officer at LauraMac, who continues to build partnerships, drive growth, and help shape the industry he spent his career serving. But John’s legacy isn’t measured by titles, it’s measured by the number he’s worked with and the way he has led them.”
Vella thanked the people he has worked with in the past for contributing to his long career.
“There’s no degree in mortgage origination, mortgage servicing, and we all gravitate to this business, and a lot of us have stayed in this business for a long time, and for a reason,” Vella said. “Again, the people I’ve met, the people that worked with me, people that worked for me-you know-I say thank you too because I always hired people that were smarter than me.”
During his long career, Vella has also held positions at Selene Finance, Altisource Portfolio Solutions, GMAC Mortgage, Bear Stearns, Option One, HSBC, Freddie Mac, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.
Wounded Military Veterans Honored
U.S. military veterans were also honored at the luncheon, with U.S. Army Sgt. (Retired) Donny Cartwright having a keynote chat with Delgado. Cartwright talked about his long military service and his transition back to civilian life.
Also featured were U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. (Retired) Felix Garcia and U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. (Retired) Alexander Sargent. All three veterans have received mortgage-free homes from the Military Warriors Support Foundation (MWSF) and supporting banks JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America.
“Supporting veterans is not, nor should it ever be, a political issue. It is not a punchline in a speech. Supporting veterans is a moral imperative.”
Cheryl Marchant of Freedom Mortgage made a special presentation of a $25,000 check to Ken Eakes, Executive Director of the MWSF.
“I’m honored to be here and proud to continue Freedom Mortgage’s support at the Five Star Conference and the Keys for Life luncheon,” Marchant said. “The Military Warrior Support Foundation does incredible work helping combat wounded veterans, Gold Star spouses, and their families build stronger, more stable futures.”
Eakes said the money would be used wisely.
“We at Military Warriors started 20 years ago. We’ve donated almost 1,000 homes in all 50 states. We’re proud of that, and we believe that we’ve started to transition from when someone gets a house like any of our recipients here to transform their life,” Eakes said.
