Coinbase Launches Derivatives Contracts in Canada | LeapRate

Coinbase said Wednesday that it has launched regulated derivatives contracts in Canada, allowing eligible Canadian traders to access the products directly on its platform for the first time.

Offered through Coinbase Financial Markets, the exchange said it is the first major crypto-native platform to offer direct native crypto futures in Canada.

It added that the capital-efficient perpetual and dated contracts allow investors to trade, speculate and hedge on the platform, adding that Canadian traders had historically often relied on unregulated or offshore venues.

The launch gives eligible investors access to 23 perpetual and dated futures such as Bitcoin, ETH and SOL, five commodity futures including gold, silver and oil, and index futures such as COIN50.

Coinbase noted that corporations and financial institutions routinely use derivatives to manage financial risk, citing Bank of Canada data showing that one-third of publicly listed Canadian non-financial corporations use derivatives to hedge earnings.

It also said global crypto derivative trading volume is about 4.4 times that of crypto spot trading.

The contracts are offered by Coinbase Financial Markets, a registered futures commission merchant with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

They feature nano-sized contracts designed for lower upfront capital requirements and up to 10x leverage, allowing traders to go long or short.
