Kerala is celebrating Thiruvonam 2026 today, which is the most important day of the 10-day Onam festival. Homes across the state are being decorated with colourful pookalams, while families prepare the traditional Onam Sadya as Malayalis come together to celebrate the festival associated with the homecoming of legendary King Mahabali.

This is the end of the ten-day festivities that began with Atham on August 16. This year’s Thiruvonam Nakshatra will begin at 10:51 PM on August 25 and run until 12:48 AM on August 27, aligning the star with the main celebration day.

Where To Get Onam Sadhya in Bangalore
No.10 Fort Cochin: Indiranagar, Marathahalli, St. Marks Road, Kalyan Nagar. Their spread has expanded to 26 dishes, including kalan, olan, rasam, pachadi and sharkkaravaratt.
Kappa Chakka Kandhari: This is Chef Regi Mathew’s restaurant where the Onam spread includes kootu kari, kaalan, sambar, olan, plus ada pradhaman and palada payasam, with takeaway.
Salt Mango Tree: Festive spread of avial, payasams, thoran and chips with Kerala red rice, available August 22-30, 11:30 AM-4:30 PM, payasam takeaway too.

Railway Announces Special Trains For Onam 2026
Indian Railways has announced 112 Onam special train trips to Kerala between August 14th and September 6th more than double last year’s 55 services. Of these, Southern Railway accounts for 54 services 38 within its own network and 16 connecting with other zones while other railway zones operate the remaining 58. The special trains connect Kerala with Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and eastern India, covering key stations including Kollam, Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Shoranur, Kozhikode and Kannur.

What To Wear On Onam 2026
For the Onam festival, the most important women’s Onam outfit is the Kasavu saree, also called the Kerala saree. It is traditionally an off-white or cream saree featuring a golden zari border called kasavu. Young girls traditionally wear pattu pavada which is a silk skirt and blouse or a settu mundu. For men, the traditional Onam outfit is the mundu a white or cream garment worn around the waist, generally finished with a traditional border.

Significance Of Onam Festival
As per the traditional story of King Mahabali, who was an Asura king remembered in Kerala. According to the legend, Mahabali’s popularity threatened the gods, which led Lord Vishnu to take the form of Vamana, a dwarf Brahmin, and ask the king for three paces of land. When Mahabali agreed, Vamana grew to cosmic size, covering the earth and sky in two steps, and with the third step pushed Mahabali down to the netherworld. Vishnu granted him wish to return to his kingdom once every year, and Onam is this annual homecoming.
