HSBC opens 3 international mutual funds to fresh SIPs, what investors need to know before investing

Investors looking to add international exposure through mutual fund SIPs now have three more schemes to choose from. HSBC Mutual Fund has reopened subscriptions in three international mutual funds, giving investors a fresh route to invest in global markets through Indian mutual funds.

The schemes are HSBC Global Emerging Markets Fund, HSBC Asia Pacific (ex-Japan) Dividend Yield Fund and HSBC Brazil Fund. According to Value Research data, all three reopened to fresh SIPs and lump-sum investments from 18 August, with investments capped at 2 lakh a month.

The reopening comes at a time when access to international mutual funds remains constrained by the industry’s overseas investment limits. This makes the latest HSBC move relevant for investors looking to diversify beyond Indian equities, although the availability of a fund should not by itself become an investment trigger.

Three HSBC funds are now open to fresh investments

The three schemes provide exposure to distinctly different parts of the global equity market.

HSBC Global Emerging Markets Fund has been the strongest performer among the three over the past year, delivering 53.6%. The Asia Pacific (ex-Japan) Dividend Yield Fund has returned 40.3%, while HSBC Brazil Fund has gained 28.9%.

Why international mutual funds keep changing investment access

The availability of international mutual funds is closely linked to the overseas investment limits applicable to Indian mutual funds. When an AMC approaches its available overseas investment capacity, it can restrict fresh subscriptions. However, when headroom becomes available, it can reopen the scheme.

The reopening gives investors an opportunity to build overseas exposure through systematic investments rather than making a large one-time allocation. SIPs can also help spread the timing risk associated with investing in volatile global markets.

Separately, Invesco resumed existing SIP instalments in three international schemes from 18 August. The schemes were Invesco India Pan European Equity Fund of Fund, Invesco India Global Equity Income Fund of Fund and Invesco India Global Consumer Trends Fund of Fund.

The latest reopening therefore gives investors three additional options for fresh international SIPs. However, the three HSBC funds differ materially in geographical exposure and their historical return profiles, making the fund’s mandate an important consideration alongside its recent performance.
