Canada’s best cash management bank 2026: RBC

Royal Bank of Canada’s (RBC) cash management strategy in the assessment period reflected growing demand for electronic payments and the increasingly international needs of Canadian companies. Its progress spanned the integration of acquired commercial relationships and increased use of established payment services.

The migration of complex HSBC Bank Canada commercial clients in early 2025 completed a significant integration milestone. The acquired business brought international expertise and commercial customers with more demanding cross-border requirements. RBC preserved existing client service assignments wherever possible, maintaining continuity as customers moved onto its systems. The bank exceeded the retention and client satisfaction targets established for the integration.

In addition, RBC increased activity across its domestic electronic payment services. Quarterly transaction volumes for the Interac e-Transfer for Business service rose from approximately 6.5 million in the first quarter to 7.9 million in the fourth. Its December market share reached 18.5%, leading the five largest domestic banks. The service also supports remittance information, helping businesses connect incoming payments with the invoices they settle.

That emphasis on payment processing and reconciliation extended to larger payment runs. RBC’s Interac e-Transfer Bulk Payables service allows businesses to pay multiple suppliers, employees or customers through a standardised file, with accompanying data supporting reconciliation and payment-status visibility. Quarterly volumes increased from approximately 1.5 million to 1.7 million during 2025 and its December market share was 50.5%.

“In Canada, we hold the highest market share across all major payment types, business deposits and business loans,” says Stephen Miller, head of payments, global transaction banking. “And we continue to add new capabilities like our foreign currency account, international payment, trade finance and award-winning virtual account solutions. These advances are helping clients move money and manage their liquidity with greater ease than ever before.”

Beyond these domestic services, RBC’s established automated clearing house capabilities supported routine cash flows across the Canada-US border. Businesses can send direct deposits and collect pre-authorised debits in both markets, giving treasury teams a means of managing recurring payments and collections. RBC processed approximately 360 million Canadian automated funds transfer credit transactions during 2025, excluding payments between its own accounts.

“We see a lot of opportunity ahead to bring even more value to our clients and shareholders,” Miller adds. “It’s an exciting time to be building with our digital, AI and data assets, and we’re energised by what we’re creating together with our clients.”
