NJ influencer who promised returns admits fraud and drug-money laundering

“Cesar Pina admitted to misappropriating millions of dollars meant for real estate investments, laundering cash for narcotics traffickers, and bribing a politician in furtherance of real estate projects,” US Attorney Robert Frazer said. “It is hard to imagine a more varied spate of criminal activity, which robbed investors of their life savings, helped facilitate drug trafficking, and undermined confidence in our elected officials.”

How the case reached this point

Pina was first charged in October 2023 with a single count of wire fraud. A federal grand jury indicted him in July 2025 on six counts. Those included two counts of money laundering and one of bribery involving federal funds. The plea covers four counts.

What it means for brokers

The release does not accuse any mortgage professional of wrongdoing. Still, brokers often field questions from investor clients and private-lending borrowers, and the case highlights familiar warning signs. These include outsized return promises, pooled investor money, and reliance on a celebrity or social media following instead of documented property ownership.

Non-bank residential mortgage lenders and originators must also keep anti-money laundering programs and file suspicious activity reports under FinCEN’s 2012 rule. Cash tied to drug trafficking is the kind of activity those programs are meant to catch.

IRS Criminal Investigation special agent in charge Jenifer L. Piovesan said, “Behind these financial transactions are real victims—investors whose trust was betrayed and communities harmed by drug trafficking and corruption.”
