Wealth managers face moderate AI disruption risk, Fitch stress test finds

Fitch drew a distinction between wealth management and private banking, noting that the latter is likely to remain high-touch, with AI augmenting rather than replacing client relationships. Wealth management, by contrast, faces greater exposure to the standardisation of products and services that AI enables.

Fiduciary and regulatory obligations requiring human accountability for advice were identified as a key mitigant, limiting full AI substitution, Fitch said. Other mitigants across financial institutions include regulatory barriers to entry, capital requirements, proprietary data, and the capacity to develop in-house AI capabilities.

The agency said it does not anticipate AI driving sector-wide rating actions over the next five years for private banking and wealth management issuers, which are likely to moderate AI’s competitive impact through greater scale and lower cost to service.

Corporate and investment banks scored 20, reflecting stronger protection from product complexity and high barriers to entry. All insurance sub-sectors also scored 20.
