Cyclone Red Alert In Andhra Pradesh, Odisha: IMD Warns Of Heavy Rain; Check District-Wise Weather Forecast Till October 28
A developing weather system over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm by October 26, raising the possibility of heavy rainfall, strong winds and rough sea conditions across coastal Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that the system could move towards the north Andhra Pradesh and adjoining south Odisha coast around October 28. The exact landfall location and intensity, however, remain uncertain.
According to the IMD forecast, the low-pressure area over the east-central and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal is likely to become a depression on October 24 and intensify into a deep depression on October 25. The system may develop further into a cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal on October 26 before moving west-northwestwards towards the coast.

The developing system could bring heavy to very heavy rainfall across several districts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, with isolated locations likely to receive extremely heavy rain. The highest rainfall risk is expected around October 27 and 28, when the system may move closer to the coastline. Authorities are monitoring the situation as the system develops over the Bay of Bengal.
Odisha Cyclone Alert: Red Warning Issued For Five Districts
The IMD has issued red, orange and yellow rainfall alerts for several districts of Odisha as the weather system is expected to approach the eastern coastline. For October 27, a red warning has been issued for Puri, Ganjam and Gajapati districts, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at a few places, with extremely heavy rain possible at isolated locations.
The red warning is expected to cover Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri districts on October 28. These areas could experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy showers possible at isolated places. Intense rainfall may lead to waterlogging, localised flooding and disruption to road transport, particularly in low-lying areas and locations vulnerable to flooding.
An orange warning has been issued for Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Dhenkanal, Khordha, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri for October 27.
For October 28, the orange warning covers Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Cuttack, Puri, Nayagarh, Dhenkanal, Khordha, Kandhamal, Kalahandi and Nabarangpur. The wide coverage of the alerts indicates that the rainfall impact could extend beyond coastal areas into parts of inland Odisha.
Andhra Pradesh Weather Forecast: Heavy Rain Likely In Coastal Districts
Coastal Andhra Pradesh is also expected to receive heavy rainfall as the system moves closer to the state. According to the forecast, parts of Anakapalli, Alluri Sitharama Raju, Kakinada, East Godavari, West Godavari and Konaseema could experience intense rainfall. Srikakulam and Krishna districts may also receive very heavy showers, while parts of Guntur, Bapatla, NTR and Nellore could see heavy rain at isolated locations.
The impact will depend on the system’s eventual track, intensity and distance from the coastline. Heavy rainfall could disrupt road transport, affect agricultural activities and create waterlogging in vulnerable areas. Residents in low-lying settlements and locations prone to flooding should monitor district-level weather advisories and follow instructions issued by local authorities.
Along with rainfall, the developing system could bring strong winds and rough sea conditions along the Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts. Wind speeds may rise as the system intensifies, creating potentially hazardous conditions for fishing and other coastal activities. Fishermen should follow official advisories and avoid venturing into the sea when restrictions are in place.
Heavy rain and strong winds could also affect standing crops, local transport, electricity supply and coastal infrastructure. The extent of the disruption will depend on how the weather system develops over the coming days. Residents should secure loose objects around their homes, avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather and remain alert to updates from the IMD.
