Demand for Star Wars memorabilia goes galactic

Demand among Star Wars memorabilia collectors for the franchise’s screen-matched lightsabres has gone galactic.

In September of last year, the lightsabre from the original Star Wars film from 1977 broke the record for a prop from the franchise, when it sold for $3.6 million with Propstore in Los Angeles. Fittingly, that record was in turn broken by (spoiler alert) his son Luke Skywalker’s lightsabre, still held in the (prosthetic) hand Darth Vader cut off in The Empire Strikes Back, the sequel from 1980. It sold for almost $3.8 million earlier this summer with Dallas-based Heritage Auctions.
