After facing fierce scrutiny just days into the job, the president questioned whether she was up to the task or would be better off retreating to her life in Southern California.

“I said, ‘Katie, you know, you don’t have to do this if you don’t want,’” Trump revealed to reporters on Oct. 16.

“I told her, ‘I think you’re better off being happy.’ We’re talking about—I want her to have a good life. I don’t want her to have a life like she’s led the last three days. I said, ‘Katie, do you need this? I don’t think you need this,'” Trump revealed.

Clarifying that he believed she had been “treated very unfairly” and had been “brutalized by the media,” Trump noted that he would make a decision about the fate of her career following his campaign travel.

“When I get back, we’re going to talk,” he said.

Before stepping into the White House political spotlight, Zacharia led a busy family life wither her Hollywood producer spouse and her three sons and a daughter, aged 12, 10, 8, and 6.

The family of six has spent several years residing in Southern California, where she balanced her political career and as a commentator with raising her children. Meanwhile, her husband made a name for himself in the entertainment industry.

Although they have yet to make the cross-country move, Trump’s latest remarks suggest that they could be staying put on the West Coast.

During her first press briefing on Oct. 13, Zacharia offered a glimpse of her family life, telling reporters, “I adore my family. I love them, they are my priority. I love being with my kids.”

She also emphasized that she would not compromise her tight-knit relationship with her children, despite holding one of the most demanding positions in the federal government.

“I intend to, to the extent possible, include my family, include my kids in my work. Though my work will be demanding, they will always be a priority,” she said.

“The idea of not spending evenings with my kids is completely unacceptable,” Zachara, who previously spent 2014–20 as a stay-at-home mom.

During her first briefing, Zacharia confirmed that her husband and children were planning to relocate to Washington, DC, allowing the family to remain together while she carried out her White House responsibilities.

The move to DC would have represented a major change from their life in Southern California, where the couple spent years raising their children. It was unclear whether the couple had planned to purchase or rent a property in D.C.

During her first week in Washington, Zacharia’s husband traveled to the capital with their four children so the family could celebrate two birthdays together.

Zacharia explained that birthdays are particularly important occasions for the family, and that she and her husband make a point of celebrating them together.

During a July 2026 appearance on the LA Mom Magazine podcast, she reflected on her time away from her political career.

“The sacrifice of staying home for me, for the young years, I knew I needed to be home with them when they were babies,” she noted. “And I completely poured into those years.

“What I perceived was a career break was actually such a gift and motivated me even more, and no years were lost,” she added.

When she returned to work, she said that she and her spouse began involving their children in their professional careers.

“His job is very Hollywood-based and not political. My job is highly political. He’s often gotten a little bit of negative feedback about his wife’s job and who she supports in the news,” she said of her husband.

She then emphasized the importance of teamwork in their marriage.
