Why Is CoreWeave Stock Falling Today?

CoreWeave (CRWV -11.23%) stock is down 11.2% as of 1:00 p.m. ET on Friday, Oct. 16, 2026, after some of the company’s bonds slipped into “distressed” territory.

CoreWeave’s debt is flashing warning signs

Yesterday, the spread on CoreWeave’s five-year credit default swaps (CDS) reached a record high of about 1,195 basis points. In simple terms, that means it would cost an investor $119,500 a year to insure $1 million in CoreWeave debt, an extremely expensive figure.

At the same time, the company’s bond prices have been sinking — some are trading near 79% of face value — pushing the yield on its October 2031 bond above 16% on Thursday.

All this is to say, the market is clearly worried that the neocloud will default on its substantial debt load — roughly $52 billion in loans and lease obligations.

Why shareholders should be concerned

CoreWeave relies heavily on borrowed money to fund its rapid growth. It’s currently spending substantially more than its operations bring in and is leaning on debt markets (and stock sales) to fund the gap.

The company must be able to continue to borrow money at rates it can afford, and while falling bond prices don’t increase interest payments on its existing fixed-rate debt, it means future borrowing and any refinancing will be more expensive. And if the market sours further, it could even find itself struggling to convince lenders to extend more credit — that would be a very big problem.

I would avoid CoreWeave stock. Its model is far too risky in my view — and an overreliance on debt is only one part of the problem.
