Mortgage renewals rival buying stress for Quebec homeowners: RBC

Renewing a mortgage feels almost as stressful as buying a first home for 35% of Quebec homeowners, according to RBC’s latest Home Ownership Poll.

Among homeowners surveyed in the province, 38% expected their next renewal to increase pressure on household finances, while 35% wished they had started planning sooner. Across Quebec respondents, 56% were concerned about interest rate increases over the coming year.

Affordability concerns also extended to the timing of a home purchase. When asked which worried them more, 66% of Quebec respondents chose waiting to buy and being priced out if prices rise, compared with 34% who chose buying now only to see prices fall.

“Quebecers are trying to make one of life’s biggest decisions in a complex market, and that’s genuinely difficult,” said Janet Boyle, RBC’s senior vice-president of home equity finance.

The poll also found interest in buying with family. Nearly half of Quebec respondents, or 46%, said they would consider living in a multigenerational home. Among current homeowners, 37% would be willing to sell their property and buy a multigenerational home with their child to help them enter the market.
