The US stock futures traded higher on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, as focus shifted towards upcoming CPI inflation scheduled later in the day, which will offer further clarity on rate hikes from the US Federal Reserve. However, Wall Street overnight was cautious after big banks reported their quarterly earnings report. Financial stocks and chipmaker stocks were broadly in the bearish trend, impacting all three indices, like the Dow Jones, Nasdaq Composite, and S&P 500.

Dow Jones + Nasdaq Composite + S&P 500

Overnight, the Dow Jones Industrial Average or DJIA index dropped 180.45 points or 0.4% to 51,670.10, while the Nasdaq Composite index slipped 41.52 points or 0.15% to finish at 27,204.38 and the S&P 500 index mildly down by 1.8 points to close at 7,805.45.

In corporate news, Trading Economics data pointed out that Bank of America shares dropped more than 2% in after-hours trading after federal regulators imposed over $1.2 billion in penalties, alleging that the bank had failed for years to report more than $5 billion in suspicious transactions. Also, memory stocks extended losses amid mounting concerns over AI-related investments and intensifying competition from China, with Micron falling 4.6%, SanDisk dropping 1.7%, Lam Research losing 3.2%, and Applied Materials tumbling 7.2%. Financial stocks also mostly ended lower following quarterly earnings releases, including Citigroup (-5.3%), Wells Fargo (-2.6%), Goldman Sachs (-0.1%), and JPMorgan (-0.3%).

Why US Q3 Earnings Are Important For Indian Investors?

As per Viram Shah, Founder and CEO of Vested, US Q3 earnings will be crucial because the market now needs corporate profits to justify the strength already seen in US equities. S&P 500 earnings are expected to grow around 31% year-on-year, but much of that growth is concentrated in AI, technology and semiconductors.

For investors, the key question is whether this growth broadens beyond a small group of companies.

In technology, Shah believes markets will also watch whether heavy AI spending is translating into stronger revenue and profits. For Indian investors with exposure to US equities, a broader earnings recovery would make the rally healthier, while continued concentration alongside high valuations and elevated bond yields would argue for a more selective approach.

Another wave of mega-cap companies’ earnings will be announced on Wednesday. These include Bank of America Corp. (BAC), BlackRock Inc. (BLK), Fastenal Co. (FAST), Morgan Stanley (MS), Progressive Corp. (PGR), and State Street Corp. (STT).

Additionally, Wednesday will be pivotal due to CPI inflation data along with MBA Mortgage Applications, Core CPI, Real Average Weekly Earnings, Real Average Hourly Earnings, and Federal Reserve Beige Book reports.

“US inflation is likely to rise again in September, driven mainly by higher fuel prices, while underlying price pressures remain contained. Cooling labour market conditions and anchored inflation expectations support the view that second-round effects remain limited. We expect the Fed to keep rates unchanged in October and to deliver a final rate hike in December. They should also benefit from moderating inflation trends through 2027,” said David Kohl, Chief Economist, Julius Baer.

He highlighted that inflation in the US continues to be driven largely by energy and fuel prices. Consequently, the sharp rise in petrol and diesel prices in September is likely to have pushed the inflation rate up once again. The headline number is expected to move towards 4%, with the monthly increase accelerating. At the same time, there are more indications that the underlying inflation trend remains moderate. Business surveys among small businesses, like the survey of the National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIP), suggest that the labour market has cooled and there were fewer job openings in September. More details coming from the NFIP survey this week will reveal whether plans to increase wages have gained momentum despite the observed upward pressure on prices. The absence of second-round effects is crucial for ensuring that the underlying inflation trend remains moderate and, even more importantly, that inflation expectations remain largely anchored.

Meanwhile, the release of the Fed’s Beige Book this week will provide additional insights that should give the Fed more confidence that any policy tightening could be delivered cautiously. Aggressive rate hikes that crash demand and push unemployment higher would have limited impact on the prices for diesel and gasoline. Rate hikes in the upcoming tightening cycle appear to be more of a tool to fix new Fed Chair Warsh’s easily misunderstood initial communication and to signal the Fed’s commitment to its price stability objective. At the same time, moderate underlying inflation and favourable base effects should allow inflation to approach 2% in 2027.

Thus, Kohl said, “we confirm our view that the Fed will leave rates unchanged at its upcoming FOMC meeting in October and reaffirm its determination to fight inflation with a rate hike in December before declaring victory over elevated inflation in 2027.”

The market is expecting US CPI inflation to accelerate to 3.6% in September 2026 from 3.4% of the previous month. On month-on-month basis, CPI is expected to increase by 0.6% which would be highest in the past five months. Annual core inflation is estimated to rise to 2.5% from 2.4%. If CPI rises, market will likely fall as it will heighten the possibility of rates hike.
