Marco Rubio India visit focuses on energy cooperation
Rubio’s Jamnagar stop carries weight due to Reliance’s large refinery there. The site is described as the world’s largest single-site refinery. It can process 1.4 million barrels per day of crude oil. The visit comes as both sides look at deeper energy links.
In March, President Donald Trump announced a major refinery plan in the United States. Trump said the US will build its first refinery in 50 years. The project is expected to receive investment from Reliance Industries. Trump said the refinery will be built in Brownsville, Texas, costing USD 300 billion.
Marco Rubio India visit follows earlier US-India strategic partnership talks
This will be Rubio’s second trip to India since May. In May, Rubio attended the Quad Foreign Ministers meeting in New Delhi. The meeting was hosted by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. The State Department framed the new visit as a step to further strengthen cooperation.
Marco Rubio India visit route includes C5+1 Ministerial in Samarkand
Before the India leg, Rubio will go to Samarkand for the C5+1 Ministerial. The State Department said Rubio will highlight how the platform supports shared strategic cooperation. Rubio will also hold bilateral meetings with senior officials from all C5 countries, including Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
The C5 group also includes Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and the Kyrgyz Republic. The State Department said Rubio will engage leaders from each country during the visit. A US commercial delegation of more than 200 business leaders will travel with Rubio. The delegation is aimed at boosting commercial cooperation with Central Asia.
Across the October 17-22 trip, the State Department linked the travel to diplomacy and trade. Meetings in India are expected to cover strategic ties and energy issues. The Jamnagar visit also aligns with attention on refining capacity and new projects. Rubio’s schedule also keeps Central Asia on the agenda through C5+1 talks.
