  • People who want to comparison shop for private student loans or student loan refinancing options
  • People who prefer an online loan application
  • People who are applying for a student loan with a cosigner

Purefy is a loan marketplace that allows you to compare student loan rates from multiple lenders for free without hurting your credit score.

  • Fill out a form with a few details about yourself. Purefy uses this information to get your pre-qualified rates.
  • You can view your options side by side for easy comparison shopping.
  • Complete your loan application online. You may be asked to upload some documents, which can vary by lender.
  • Each lender on the Purefy platform has its own eligibility standards. For example, some lenders may have different citizenship requirements for private student loans.
  • The exact credit score you need varies by lender, but most require good or excellent credit to get a private student loan or refinance.
  • You may need to apply with a cosigner to increase chances of approval unless you have a strong credit history.
  • Not all lenders work with all schools, so Purefy will show you only the loan programs available at your college or university.

After comparing pre-qualified rates and choosing the lender that best fits your needs, you’re taken to its website to start your application. The process takes less than 15 minutes, according to Purefy. You’ll have to provide personal information about yourself and your cosigner, if you have one, and a few documents, which may include a pay stub.

The time for disbursal varies by lender, but according to Purefy, it can take 30 to 60 days.

Borrower tip: Refinancing federal student loans into a private student loan can make you ineligible for certain types of protections, such as income-driven repayment plans, federal debt forgiveness programs and forbearance/deferment options through the Department of Education.

Purefy’s lenders will work with borrowers facing temporary financial hardship, but each lender has its own policy. If you’re granted forbearance, interest will continue to accrue during that period, but no payment will be due.

Purefy’s lenders don’t offer a deferment period.

Repayment of in-school loans typically begins shortly after leaving school, but interest almost always accrues immediately after the loan is disbursed.

Purefy’s lender partners usually offer four repayment options:

  • Deferred. No payments are due while you’re in school. Full payments start after your grace period ends, usually six months after you graduate or stop attending school, either part-time or sometimes full-time.
  • Interest only. Make smaller, interest-only payments while you’re in school and during the grace period. Full payments start after the grace period ends.
  • Fixed $25 payments. These $25 payments will continue while you’re in school and during the grace period. Full payments start after the grace period ends.
  • Immediate. Full monthly payments start shortly after the funds are disbursed, even while you’re in school.
