Tuya’s 2026 Outlook: Software Strategy Drives Sustained Margin Expansion

When a developer wants to link a smart light bulb to a home thermostat without writing a single line of messy custom code, they often turn to a cloud-based platform to handle the heavy lifting. Tuya (TUYA -0.59%) owns that infrastructure, operating a massive cloud-agnostic platform that serves as the connective tissue for millions of smart devices worldwide.

While the stock has struggled, falling 34% over the past year to its current price of $1.72 as of Oct. 6, 2026, the underlying business has fundamentally changed from a loss-making hardware distributor to a profitable software-driven player.

Our proprietary Hidden Gems scoring system assigns Tuya an overall Superscore of 76 out of 100, placing it in the Strong category. The Superscore is an AI-powered metric that evaluates a company’s overall strength by combining financial performance, product-market position, technological capabilities, leadership quality, and relative valuation. It represents the unification of all our scores into a single score for public companies, with five rating bands: Exceptional (90-100), Strong (75-89), Above Average (60-74), Average (40-59), and Cautious (0-39).

This score sits in the Top ~16% of every company we score. The Superscore is one data-driven signal worth investigating, and this article pairs the reasons the score is high with the reasons it is not higher, so you can weigh both sides before doing more work.

Why TUYA Has a 76 Superscore

  • Operational turnaround success: The company achieved GAAP profitability in fiscal 2025, reporting a net profit of $58 million, marking a definitive shift from prior years’ heavy losses.
  • Software-centric margin expansion: Trailing-12-month (TTM) operating margin climbed to 8.4% as of Q2 2026 — from 3.6% for the full year 2025 — as management successfully pivoted from low-margin hardware to high-value software services.
  • Developer ecosystem scale: The platform now supports over 2.09 million registered AI developers as of June 2026, creating a self-reinforcing network effect that attracts new enterprise clients.
  • Disciplined capital allocation: Leadership slashed R&D and SG&A expenses as a percentage of revenue in recent years, proving it can scale its platform without the unsustainable cash burn seen during its early expansion phase.

Why Is TUYA’s Superscore Not Higher?

  • Stagnant revenue growth: Top-line revenue increased by 16% in Q2 fiscal 2026, but the company’s multi-year growth trajectory remains uneven as it balances the phase-out of low-value hardware with newer software initiatives.
  • Consumer sentiment friction: Persistent community reports of intrusive AI promotion and connectivity issues suggest the user experience remains a potential weak point for brand loyalty.
  • Cloud-agnostic competitive risk: The IoT platform layer is increasingly commoditized by hyperscalers, limiting the company’s ability to maintain a permanent chokepoint as the market demands broader interoperability.
  • Dual-class voting structure: The founder-led dual-class share arrangement grants insiders 63% of voting power, limiting the influence of minority shareholders and creating entrenchment risks during strategic pivots.

Is TUYA Right For Your Portfolio?

This stock warrants a closer look if…

  • You are looking for profitable, best small-cap tech stocks that have successfully transitioned from high-burn start-up to stable software-as-a-service providers.
  • You value companies with a massive, proven developer ecosystem that provides a moat against newer, less established market entrants.

You may want to keep researching before buying if…

  • You are uncomfortable with a dual-class share structure that concentrates decision-making power in the hands of the founders rather than the broader investor base.
  • You have concerns about the long-term competitive threat posed by large cloud hyperscalers that can potentially commoditize the IoT platform layer.

The Superscore is one data-driven signal worth investigating, and you should weigh it against your own research, financial goals, and risk tolerance before making any investment decisions.

My 5-year prediction for TUYA stock

Tuya’s accelerating growth and improving margins create a buying opportunity. The 33% decline in the stock over the past year has left it trading at a modest valuation of about 13 times forward earnings estimates. This is while the business is experiencing accelerating revenue growth and margin expansion.

The problem is whether Tuya can maintain this growth amid a highly competitive market. Two reasons to be optimistic are strong adoption among its highest-value customers, which contribute 89% of the company’s total PaaS revenue. This adds a layer of resiliency to the business.

Growth in the number of developers on the platform is also valuable, which is now about 2.1 million. Tuya is building a large base of contributors, which can serve as a growth engine over time.

Analysts expect earnings to grow about 18% annualized over the next two years. If Tuya can sustain that rate of increase through 2031, I would expect the stock to at least double within the next five years. However, if the company’s PaaS revenue decelerates and fails to sustain high-double-digit growth, that would be a reason to consider selling.
