PM gives timeline for leasehold reform
Leaseholders have just months to wait before legislation is passed to protect them from high costs, as Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced his timeline for reform at the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool.
Burnham (pictured) said his party would introduce a bill before Christmas for “long-overdue leasehold reform”.
He said: “We promise we will not forget our leaseholders.
“To the millions of leaseholders across the country, the days of you being squeezed for every penny are coming to an end.”
Earlier today, Housing Secretary Angela Rayner delivered her speech on “ending the injustice of fleecehold”.
Rayner said that, following a public consultation, caps would be applied to permission fees for requests, such as having a pet or changing their own front door, and administrative fees for document requests, such as building safety certificates.

Burnham also reinforced his commitment to launching the “biggest council housebuilding programme since the post-war era”.
He said Right to Buy reform would follow, which would remove that right for tenants of the newly built stock, “to protect them for generations to come.”
