New build starts up 6% in Q2, government figures show – Mortgage Strategy
English new build starts were 35,910 in Q2 2026, according to figures from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG).
The figure was up 6% on the 34,440 new starts recorded in Q1 2026 and 20% higher than the 31,900 in Q2 2025.
Of that 35,910, 27,730 were private enterprise starts, 7,920 were from housing associations and 260 were local authority,
The number of completed homes was 35,800 in Q2 2026, down 3% on Q1 2026 but 1% higher than the same period one year earlier.
Of that figure, 25,840 were private enterprise, 9,560 housing associations and 400 local authority.
Earlier this month the latest Glenigan construction index found that the construction sector continued to stall against a backdrop of ongoing economic uncertainty, borrowing costs and lingering investor caution.
