Canada and the EU could share one financial services market
Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia hold association agreements with the EU, she said, but those require alignment with the bloc’s laws, something she said Canada is unlikely to want.
René Repasi, a German member of the European Parliament, told CBC‘s As It Happens that a Canada-EU arrangement of the kind described would require “a very comprehensive new international treaty.”
The closest existing model, he said, is the European Economic Area, which includes Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein and involves full integration in the internal market, participation in EU legislative products, and adherence to European Court of Justice case law.
Carney told reporters in Strasbourg that Canadian lawmakers will decide the shape of any alliance, including multiple debates and a vote in Parliament, according to CNBC.
He said Canada is at “the start of a road” and is not seeking full EU membership.
