Research Says Mobile Numbers Have Morphed Into Multi-Use Verification Credentials – Digital Transactions

Mobile telephone numbers are evolving into much more than communication endpoints. They’re rapidly becoming verification tools, especially for online financial services, according to newly released research.

The findings come from MobileSphere LLC, a Cambridge, Mass.-based developer of mobile-communication services, including Slynumber, which provides customers with an app-based, globally useful U.S. mobile number for inbound and outbound calls, texting, voicemail, caller ID and other features.

MobileSphere say its review of first-half 2026 activity on the Slynumber platform shows financial services accounted for 41.6% of identified verification activity. That was far more than the second-most active vertical, digital services at 18.8% of verifications, which includes access to services from online providers such as Google, Microsoft, and artificial-intelligence platforms. In third place was messaging at 11%.

MobileSphere says the findings show mobile numbers have become much more than a way to call or text. “The mobile number has quietly become a critical part of our digital life,” Toufic Mobarak, MobileSphere’s founder and president, said in a statement. “We depend on it to access our money, communicate, activate social and messaging apps, recover accounts, and confirm our identity. That role becomes even more critical when people travel, relocate, or live across borders.”

Mobile-number verifications for financial services increased nearly 10% from the start of the study period in January to its end in June, according to MobilSphere. “Activity spanned banks, payment services, bank-linking platforms, credit products, and cash-flow tools, reinforcing how deeply the mobile number is embedded in financial authentication, account access, and customer continuity,” the company said.

While still small compared with other verification uses, some of the strongest growth on Slynumber came from AI verifications, which are included in the digital-services category. “AI is becoming another recurring mobile-identity use case,” the company said. Activity connected to OpenAI, developer of the ChatGPT platform, reached record levels in May and June, according to MobileSphere.

The findings are based on 579,236 aggregated verification events, 434,265 of which could be categorized by the originating app or service, MobileSphere said.
