Before You Transfer Points to Japan Airlines, Beware

Japan Airlines offers some of the most highly regarded first and business class cabins in the world, making it an attractive option for the many travelers looking to fly between the U.S. and Japan in comfort.

But redeeming JAL miles is a different story.

Many of the high-value redemptions commonly known as “sweet spots” are difficult or impossible to find. Between limited award seats, high fuel surcharges and a booking experience that feels outdated, redeeming JAL miles may be much more challenging than its award chart suggests.

If you’re hoping to book one of JAL’s advertised sweet spots, here’s what you should know before transferring your points.

55,000-mile business class awards are hard to find

One of the biggest selling points of Japan Airlines Mileage Bank is its advertised 55,000-mile business class award between the U.S. and Japan.

However, after searching multiple dates and departure cities, we weren’t able to find any business class awards at that price.

Instead, the lowest pricing we found was 80,000 miles one way.

On top of that, the itinerary adds nearly $500 in taxes and fuel surcharges.

For comparison, American Airlines charges 60,000 AAdvantage miles plus just $11.20 in taxes for a one-way business class ticket between the U.S. and Japan, which is a better value.

While award availability changes constantly, our searches suggest that Japan Airlines’ published award chart doesn’t necessarily reflect the prices travelers are likely to find in practice.

Partner award sweet spots aren’t always bookable

Some of the best-known Japan Airlines sweet spots involve partner airlines. One commonly cited example is Emirates’ fifth-freedom flight between New York (JFK) and Milan (MXP).

Based on JAL’s distance-based partner award chart, this route should cost just 42,000 miles in business class because the flight falls into the 2,001-to-4,000-mile distance band.

However, we were never able to find this elusive flight. While Emirates showed saver-level (the lowest award price) business class redemption options on the JFK-to-Milan route, Japan Airlines Mileage Bank didn’t yield any results for the same flight and date.

This doesn’t necessarily mean the award is never bookable. Partner airlines don’t always make the same award inventory available to every loyalty program, and availability can change from day to day.

Still, it highlights an important point: Don’t assume a published sweet spot will actually be available before transferring your points. We encountered similar issues when searching for other commonly recommended partner awards, including Air France between Tokyo and Paris.

Searching JAL’s website is frustrating

Part of the challenge isn’t just finding award inventory; it’s searching for it in the first place.

Unlike many airline loyalty programs, Japan Airlines Mileage Bank doesn’t offer a flexible-date calendar for partner awards. Instead, each search requires entering a specific travel date, submitting the search and waiting for the results before starting over with a different date.

That makes it much more difficult to determine whether an award simply isn’t available on your chosen date or whether it’s rarely available at all.

During our research, we ran roughly 20 individual award searches looking for several commonly cited sweet spots. Without a calendar view, checking additional dates quickly became a lengthy process.

You won’t find JAL award space in common search tools

One of the challenges with booking Japan Airlines awards is that JAL’s award inventory isn’t available through award search tools, like Seats.aero and Roame.

That means you often have to search directly on JAL’s website instead of quickly comparing availability across multiple dates and routes using the tools many award travelers rely on. Combined with JAL’s clunky website, it becomes much more difficult to find award space.

Generous routing rules don’t guarantee availability

JAL offers generous routing rules for partner award tickets, allowing up to six flight segments on a single award ticket. Because partner awards are priced based on the total distance flown, travelers may be able to visit multiple destinations on one award without paying for each flight separately.

During our research, we attempted to build a two-segment Korean Air itinerary that complied with JAL’s published routing rules. Although the individual flights were available, we weren’t able to find award availability for the same itinerary through Japan Airlines Mileage Bank.

While cash availability doesn’t guarantee award availability, these searches illustrate how difficult it can be to verify whether JAL’s published routing rules are actually usable. The multi-city trip makes testing different dates and itineraries makes a time-consuming process even more arduous.

New JAL members have to wait 60 days to redeem miles

If you’re planning to transfer points to Japan Airlines for an upcoming redemption, don’t wait until the last minute to create your Mileage Bank account. According to Japan Airlines, some newly opened accounts may be restricted from redeeming award tickets for up to 60 days after enrollment.

If you’re planning a trip to Japan, register for a JAL account well in advance. That way you won’t risk missing out on the award you want simply because your account is too new.

Japan Airlines award tickets can deliver excellent value, but travelers should set realistic expectations. Before transferring points, confirm that the award you want is actually bookable, as other airline programs may offer a similar redemption with less effort and lower fees.
