Telecom Tariff Hike: Mobile Recharge Rates to Rise? Airtel, Jio and Vodafone Idea May Hike Tariffs by 12% in 4-6 Months
News
Indian mobile users could face another increase in telecom tariffs over the coming months, according to an industry outlook reported by CNBC-TV18. The report cited Piyush Pandey, Senior Vice President at Centrum India, as expecting a tariff increase of around 12% within the next four to six months.
Telecom Tariff Hike 2026: Mobile Recharge Prices May Rise 12% in Next 4-6 Months
If implemented, the proposed increase could affect prepaid and postpaid mobile plans across India’s major private telecom operators, including Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea. For consumers, this could mean higher monthly mobile recharge costs, while telecom companies could see stronger revenue and cash flows.

Mobile Recharge Price Hike 2026: When Could Tariffs Increase?
The timing of the next telecom tariff hike in India will be closely watched by both consumers and investors. Pandey expects operators could raise prices within four to six months, with November-December emerging as a possible period for the next revision.
The previous broad-based tariff increase by major operators came in July 2024. According to the report, telecom companies could consider another increase sooner than the typical two to two-and-a-half-year cycle if market conditions support higher pricing.
However, the timing and size of any future hike will ultimately depend on decisions taken by individual telecom companies. The 12% figure is an analyst expectation, not an announced tariff revision by Airtel, Jio or Vodafone Idea.
Mobile Recharge Rates May Rise: Telecom Firms Eye Higher Revenue Per User
The biggest reason is the need to improve average revenue per user (ARPU). ARPU measures how much revenue a telecom operator earns from each customer and is one of the most important indicators for the sector.
Higher tariffs can increase revenue without requiring operators to add a large number of new subscribers. This becomes particularly important in a mature telecom market where subscriber growth is limited and data consumption continues to rise.
Telecom companies are also spending heavily on network infrastructure. The expansion of 5G services, additional 4G capacity and rising mobile data traffic require continued investment. A tariff increase could therefore give operators more room to fund these expenses while improving profitability.
Airtel, Jio, Vodafone Idea Shares: What Tariff Hike Means for Investors
A potential mobile tariff hike is particularly important for telecom stocks because higher tariffs can improve revenue, ARPU and operating cash flow.
Bharti Airtel is among the preferred telecom stocks in the analyst view cited in the report. Indus Towers is also favoured within the broader telecom space. Vodafone Idea, meanwhile, remains a more cautious proposition despite signs of improvement in its operations.
For Vodafone Idea, higher tariffs could provide additional financial support as the company works to strengthen its network and compete with Airtel and Jio. However, the company’s funding requirements and financial obligations remain important considerations for investors.
Telecom Tariff Hike: What It Means for Common Mobile Users
For consumers, even a seemingly modest percentage increase can make a difference over an entire year. Users with monthly, quarterly or annual recharge plans could see higher costs if operators revise prices across prepaid and postpaid offerings.
The impact will depend on how companies structure the new plans. Operators could raise the price of existing packs, change the benefits offered under different plans or encourage customers to shift towards higher-value packages.
