SIM Card New Rules 2026: DoT Announces SIM Limit For Customers From August 24; Everything You Need To Know
News
The Department of Telecommunications has brought a limit to the number mobile connections registered in an individual’s name and has informed telecom operators to not provide new connections to subscribers who have already reached the permitted limit.
As per the DoT circular dated August 17th, with telecom operators required to put the necessary technical and organisational measures in place from August 24.

However, there is an important point that subscribers should know: the nine-SIM limit is not a new rule introduced in 2026. The cap has been in place since instructions issued by the DoT in August 2012.
How Many SIM Cards Can One Person Have In India?
Under the existing rules, an individual can have up to nine mobile connections registered in their name in various telecom operators.
The limit is lower in certain regions. Subscribers in Jammu & Kashmir, Assam and the North-Eastern states are permitted to have up to six mobile connections.
It should be noted that the limit is applicable to all telecom operators combined.
For example, if a person has four Airtel numbers, three Jio numbers and two Vodafone Idea numbers registered in their name, they have already reached the nine-connection limit.
Not A New Nine-SIM Rule
The latest DoT directive is getting attention because of reports about the government restricting people from obtaining more than nine SIM cards. But the nine-connection limit has existed for years.
This means customers who already have nine connections will not suddenly be asked to surrender them; instead, the government is taking measures to prevent additional connections from being issued beyond the existing limit.
New SIM Connection Will Be Denied After Limit Is Reached
From August 24th this year, telecom operators are required to bring technical measures to find out which subscribers are getting more mobile connections after crossing their allowed limit. The system will cross-check a subscriber’s existing connections before activating a new number.
What Happens If A 10th SIM Is Activated?
If a connection is activated even the applicable limit, the connection may be suspended for a day while the matter is resolved. Telecom operators have also been given time to complete their integration with the Digital Intelligence Platform. The deadline for full system integration is November 30, 2026.
