Delhi Weather Today, 9 July: IMD Issues Heavy Rain Alert in NCR; Check Flight Status & School Holiday Updates

Heavy rainfall lashed Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) early on Thursday, July 9, bringing relief from the recent spell of hot and humid weather but causing widespread waterlogging, traffic snarls and travel disruptions across the region. India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued fresh weather alerts, warning of more thunderstorms, lightning and rain throughout the day.

Delhi Weather Today, 9 July 2026: IMD Issues Orange Alert, Red Alert for Nearby Areas

The downpour affected thousands of office-goers, railway passengers and air travellers, with roads submerged in several low-lying areas and traffic slowing significantly.

IMD has placed Delhi under an Orange Alert, forecasting light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds on Thursday. Some neighbouring districts have been placed under a Red Alert, indicating the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall.

Delhi Temperature Today

According to the IMD, Delhi’s maximum temperature is expected to remain around 27 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may stay close to 26 degrees Celsius, providing significant relief from the sweltering weather experienced earlier this week.

Skymet Rain Forecast: East Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad Among Areas Set for Heavy Rain

Private weather forecaster Skymet has predicted even heavier rainfall in parts of the NCR. Areas including East Delhi, East NCR, Ghaziabad, Noida, Baghpat and Meerut may receive 180 mm to 250 mm of rainfall over the next 24 hours. Meanwhile, Central Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad and adjoining areas are expected to receive 80 mm to 150 mm of rainfall.

Waterlogging Brings Delhi and Gurugram Traffic to a Standstill

The continuous rain led to extensive waterlogging across several parts of Delhi, severely affecting vehicular movement during the morning peak hours. Water accumulated near New Delhi Railway Station, Munirka, and several other low-lying localities, resulting in long traffic queues and delayed travel.

The situation was equally challenging in Gurugram, where heavy rain brought traffic to a crawl on several major roads. Vehicles were seen stranded on the service lane of the Delhi-Jaipur Highway near Narsinghpur, while severe congestion was also reported from Basai, Umang Bhardwaj Chowk, Kadipur, Sector-10A, Sohna Road and several other important stretches.

School Holiday Declared in Ghaziabad; Delhi Schools Closely Monitoring Situation

In view of the heavy rainfall, Ghaziabad District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar Mandar declared a holiday on July 9 for all schools across every education board from Classes 1 to 12.

Although no city-wide school holiday has been announced in Delhi, the worsening weather conditions have raised the possibility of schools reviewing physical classes if rainfall intensifies further. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and individual schools may decide to switch to online classes or suspend offline teaching depending on local conditions.

Gurugram Police Advises Work From Home

Amid the severe traffic congestion caused by waterlogging, Gurugram Police has advised corporate offices to allow employees to work from home for two consecutive days. The advisory, issued through the department’s official X handle, aims to reduce traffic congestion and ensure public safety while heavy rainfall continues across the city.

Delhi Airport Flights Status Today: Air India, IndiGo Issue Important Travel Advisory

The heavy rainfall has also affected travel to Indira Gandhi International Airport, prompting major airlines, including Air India and IndiGo, to issue advisories for passengers.

Airlines have urged travellers to check their flight status before leaving for the airport and start their journey earlier than usual, as waterlogging and slow-moving traffic could lead to delays on airport-bound roads. While flight operations are continuing, passengers have been advised to factor in additional travel time because of the adverse weather.

Delhi-NCR Weather Forecast Till July 13

According to the IMD, rainfall activity is expected to continue across Delhi-NCR over the next few days. Thunderstorms accompanied by rain are likely on July 10 and July 11, with strong winds of 40 kmph to 50 kmph expected during this period. The maximum temperature may rise to around 36 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is likely to remain near 27 degrees Celsius.

Rainfall intensity is expected to decrease on July 12 and July 13, although isolated showers may continue in parts of the region.
