Karnataka is set to witness a statewide bandh on Thursday, August 13, after Kannada activist Vatal Nagaraj called for a shutdown over a series of water-related demands involving Tamil Nadu and Goa. The protest is centred on issues including the Mekedatu project, the Mahadayi river dispute and the Kalasa-Banduri project.

The bandh call has received support from several pro-Kannada organisations. Nagaraj has said that more than 2,000 organisations have backed the protest, with the number expected to increase before August 13.

The planned shutdown comes after a protest at the Attibele border between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, where activists blocked traffic in both directions. The blockade disrupted interstate movement and affected bus services between the two states.

Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport has also not been officially declared closed, despite the protest organisers’ warning over a possible visit by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister.

Offices, shops, markets and other establishments may take individual decisions on whether to remain open, depending on local participation in the bandh.

What’s Closed Today in Bengaluru, Mysuru & Other Cities

The August 13 Karnataka bandh is expected to affect transport, hotels and commercial activity if the shutdown receives widespread support. Vatal Nagaraj has appealed to hotel owners in Bengaluru and Mysuru to keep their establishments closed.

Inter-state bus services, particularly on Karnataka-Tamil Nadu routes, could face cancellations, delays or diversions, while freight movement may also be disrupted if highways and border crossings are blocked. The Attibele border has already witnessed a two-way blockade, with vehicles from both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu being stopped.

There has been uncertainty over educational institutions ahead of the bandh. An association that had earlier called for schools to remain closed on August 13 has since withdrawn that call, according to reports.

Therefore, students and parents should follow announcements from their individual schools, colleges and local authorities rather than assume that all educational institutions across Karnataka will remain shut.
